Key Characters:

Growth Form: Small to medium-sized, terrestrial, deciduous herbs arising from tubers.

Stems: Stems erect, with few to numerous leaves near base, sometimes along the entire length.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades thin. Margins entire. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers bisexual (perfect), resupinate, usually green to greenish white. Perianth: dorsal sepal and lateral petals usually partly connate to form a hood over the column, lateral sepals erect, spreading or reflexed. Petals Labellum pendent, usually much larger than other floral parts, adnate to column, entire to 3-lobed, margins sometimes fringed, base spurred, the spur narrow or inflated distally. Stamen 1, adnate to and surrounding the style forming a column. column short, thick, unwinged, usually with 2 small auricles; anther terminal, erect, pollinia 2, large, each with a long caudicle and terminating in a pair of viscid disks. Ovary inferior, 3-carpellate; rostellum broad, forming a transverse ridge beneath base of anther cells; stigma beneath rostellum, concave or flat, 2-lobed or lobes connate.

Fruit: Capsules 6-ribbed.
